This is a challenging course that takes a global view on business, investigating why and how companies go international, why and how they succeed in face of global competition. It provides students a conceptual tool by which to understand how economic, social and political factors influence both domestic and international operations . Globalization is considered as the process by which national economies are becoming more integrated.
The course offers an integrated framework, in contrast to a functional approach, and involves the simultaneous consideration of all business functions as they interact globally. It takes an inclusive view of international business from a truly global perspective , in contrast to a strictly U.S.-centric view. It goes beyond the textbook to see how concepts relate to the real world.
As a result of successful participation in the course, the student will
The course will combine elements of lecture, discussions of items of current interest, and the analysis of short cases. Students are urged to share their comments about relevant current events and participate actively in the discussion of daily news items, related concepts, and problems , both in the class and on the class website.
The approach of the course to learning is based on the premise that we learn concepts and principles best by observing them in applications - and, vice-versa, by observing real-life situations thoughtfully, we discover fundamental principles, concepts, and laws at work.
To this end, the textbook has an excellent coverage of international business and the bulk of the formal knowledge about the subject should come from the thoughtful home study of the text. The text is supplemented by a range of interactive electronic resources and website postings.
The instructor's role is perceived to be one of the significant additional resources, complementing the text material through sharing his personal experience in a range of practical business situations.
The course is available to upper-division students . Please observe that this is a demanding course. In order to achieve the course objectives successfully, students are urged to schedule about 100 to 120 hours of home study for the course, in addition to regular class attendance.
