Letter of Introduction
In
this course you will become familiar with content and methodologies for
teaching art to children, K-12. This is
lecture-reading-activity course which consists of 14 lecture sessions and 10
activity sessions. The time commitment
required is equal to the time required to complete a 3-unit studio art course:
about 90 - 110 hours of lecture, discussion, assessment and studio activity.
The first session will appear on-line on January 25, 2006. Sessions will be presented weekly througH May 16, 2006. Class orientation is schedueled for January 26 at 10 AM Room 203, Art Building and and on January 31 from 3 to 4PM. You can attend either day.A
‘green sheet’ with course goals and objectives and materials list will be available
at the first session. This letter of
introduction is sent only as an orientation to the course.
The
course is taught entirely on-line.
Participants will not need to come to the San Jose State University
Campus unless they wish to meet with the instructor during regularly scheduled
office hours as announced on the Green Sheet . The orientation is optional but highly reccommended.
Appointments can be made on-line at the address above or at webct site under heading "mailbox".
Lectures,
discussion and assessment activities are presented and responded to on-line,
but studio activities must be
accomplished through the teaching of ten art lessons to at least 5 youngsters
for a minimum of 20 hours over a 12 week period. (This includes prep time and teaching time)
The lessons to be taught are
provided by this course. Children should be of the same age or grade level with the acception of an afterschool program. Teaching
will begin during the third week of the course. Suggestions for modifications for different age groups are
included in the lessons.
Participants
in Art 138 online who are teachers may want to teach the lessons to their whole
class, but select five members of the class as their ‘activity group’ for
purposes of this course. Those who are
not teachers will need to find a group of young people to serve as their
activity group. The activity group must be constant, that is, the
youngsters must participate in the entire set of lessons. Those who are not presently teaching may
want to contact a nearby school and arrange to teach in that school as a
volunteer. An after-school program
could become the center of activities if the participant can make sure that all
children will attend the whole series of lessons.
All
participants must obtain a letter of agreement from the principal of the school
or program administrator allowing the participant to teach art to at least 5
youngsters for a minimum of 20 hours over a 12 week period in their school or
as part of an extended school program. This letter should be faxed to the
instructor of the course during the first week of the class. Participants who do not send the letter of
agreement by the end of the third week of class (February 7)will be dropped from the
course,no exceptions. You may not begin to teach without the permission form signed. You must begin to teach the week of February 7. A form for that letter
follows. Art supplies for the lessons
are materials commonly used in schools and possibly may be provided by the
school or program. It may be that the
participant will need to purchase the materials. The cost will range from $35 to $50. A list of supplies will be
provided in the first session of the course.
You will also need a three ring binder to hold the copies of student work and their written assignments. Photos of children's work will be displayed during the course. These photos may be taken with a regular camera , scanned images, or a digital camera. You will be taking pictures of the student work throughout the semester and a digital camera is highly reccommended.
Since
the work of the youngsters will be shared on-line with others in Art 138, participants
must also obtain a letter of release from the parents or guardians of the 5 children to give permission to the participant and San Jose State University to
publish their children’s work on-line (with credits, of course). Children’s
work will not be individually evaluated but will become part of a portfolio of
course work submitted by the participant at the end of the semester in a 'portfolio ' of work that will include a written component by the children.
Parent
or guardian permission forms are included in course materials. Permission forms
must be faxed to the instructor by the end of the fourth week of class. Participants who do not send these forms
will be dropped from the class.
